Replacing Roof Felt From Inside

Phil demonstrates what can happen when roofing felt has gone rotten and what needs to be done to fix it.
Replacing roof felt from inside. After all it keeps water out of the building. To replace a small section of roofing felt involves stripping the tiles from the roof and replacing felt between two joists. And while nobody likes having to pay to replace a roof the critical and aesthetic function it serves should help ease the pain of spending 8 000 to 20 000 on the work. Replacing just the felt that has physically broken can fix any leaking without the expense of work on the whole roof which usually requires scaffolding.
However it can be difficult and unsafe to do it on a ladder but you might find someone who can do it. Roofing felt is comprised of a base made from natural materials such as wood cellulose or synthetic ones such as fiberglass or polyester and then coated or saturated with a protective coating such as bitumen asphalt which repels water but still allows the product to breathe. The felt near the eaves near the guttering can age faster than felt further up the roof. Roofing felt is a layer of tar paper installed beneath the shingles to provide a backup waterproof membrane in case of leakage.
Of all major home repairs installing new roofing is arguably as important as it gets. Is felt really that important and what is roofing felt anyway. Where wind driven rain is working under the roof and causing leaks then the felt will need to be replaced.
