Repairing iron guttering. Guttering is manufactured from many different materials such as cast iron pvcu aluminium lead zinc steel galvanised or painted copper and more. If there are large areas of rust brush them off with a wire hand brush or use a round wire cup brush fitted in an electric drill. It shatters easily and if it lands on a hard surface dangerous fragments can fly off. If you toss the guttering clear of the house you might overbalance and fall off the ladder so aim to lower larger sections gently to the ground with a rope.
Begin with the section linking gutter and downpipe. The material from which your gutters are made will determine the best methods for repair as well as influencing the cost of such repairs. Small leaks and loose pipes can usually be repaired fairly easily but major restoration work is a specialist job because of the need for working at height and manoeuvring awkward lengths of heavy guttering. Try not to drop cast iron guttering to the ground.
